Reflection on situating tool

 ICT as a Situating tool

Definition

A situating tool is a digital or technological resource that places students in real-life or simulated situations to help them understand and apply what they learn in a meaningful context.

It connects theoretical learning with practical experience through interactive and immersive digital environments.

For example, using Virtual Reality (VR) to visit ancient Egypt allows students to explore pyramids and artifacts, helping them connect textbook knowledge with realistic, engaging experiences.

Examples of situating tool are:

My understanding on ICT as a situating tool

ICT as a situating tool  helps learners experience learning rather than just read or hear about it. Through simulation, virtual environments, and interactive tools, students become part of real or imaginary situations where they can explore, test, and reflect on what they have learned.

Reasons for Integrating  Situating Tools in the Classroom are:

  • Make learning active, fun, and realistic
  • Help students connect classroom knowledge with the real world
  • Encourage critical thinking and curiosity
  • Support learning by doing through interactive experiences
  • Build problem-solving and decision-making skills

Application of  Situating Tool in  Teaching and Learning

Below are examples of how ICT as a  situating tools can be used in classes to make learning meaningful and engaging:

I will use Google map to locate Ringpung  dzong

Class: VI

Subject: History

Topic: Exploring Ringpung dzong

How to use:
Use Google Map to locate Ringpung Dzong

Show its position on the map and identify nearby rivers, roads, and villages.

Let students use zoom and street view to observe the landscape and building surroundings.

Google map helps students connect real-world locations to classroom learning

Another example is using graphic calculator

Class:  VI

Subject:  Mathematics

Topic:  Understanding Patterns and Graphs

Activity:  Explore patterns through graphs

How to use:

Teacher demonstrate how to open the calculator and enter pairs of numbers (x, y).

Example pattern:

x  y

1  2

2  4

3  6

Students enter these values into the graphic calculator and plot the graph

Then Press the graph button to see the plotted line or curve on the screen.

Then let Students observe that a the pattern forms a straight line (showing multiplication by 2).

Benefits of using graphic calculator

Makes abstract math concepts concrete and visual.

Improves understanding of relationships between numbers.

By using ICT situating tools, teachers can create lessons that go beyond the textbook and help students see, feel, and explore what they learn.

As a future educators, i will use educational games to build creativity and problem-solving. These tools is essential to prepare children for the digital and dynamic world ahead where learning happens not just by reading, but by doing and experiencing. By using ICT situating tools such as virtual labs, Google Maps, simulations, and VR, teachers can connect classroom knowledge to the real world.
